American Flag Cocktail

A Drink For July 4th Or Any Patriotic Celebration

Overview

South of the border, a popular cocktail is Coctel Bandera Mexicana. Representing the colors of the Mexican flag (bandera Mexicana), this cocktail is a trio of drinks including blanco tequila (white), sangrita (red) and lime juice (green), the colors of the Mexican flag. It is served in three separate “caballitos,” shot glasses, and sipped alternately.

TO MAKE THE CLASSIC MEXICAN BANDERA INSTEAD OF THE AMERICAN FLAG SHOTS: Simply substitute a shot of fresh-squeezed lime juice for the Blue Margarita in the line-up below.

Riazul Premium Tequila has created the American Flag cocktail to celebrate July 4th. The trio includes a small glass of silver Tequila (also known as blanco or white Tequila), followed by a traditional red sangrita and chased with a blue Margarita. Raise the flag to this tequila trifecta!

Red Drink: Sangrita

Makes approximately 1 liter (volume will vary based on size of fruits). You’ll need a collection of shot glasses, brandy snifters or juice glasses, three per person. The sangrita can be made a day in advance and refrigerated. If you’re short on time, you can substitute spicy tomato juice (mix with Worcestershire sauce and some hot sauce) or a premium Bloody Mary mix.

There are as many recipes for sangrita as they are for sangria–to which it is not related. Sangrita, meaning “little blood,” dates back to the 1920s, as a non-alcoholic chaser to a shot of straight Tequila blanco.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds raw tomatoes, peeled and
    seeded
  • Juice from 3 freshly-squeezed oranges
  • Juice from 2 freshly-squeezed limes
  • 1 small onion, chopped finely
  • 1-2 fresh Serrano chiles, minced
(you can substitute jalapeños or other
    chiles you have on hand)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

  • In a blender, combine the first five ingredients. Strain through a coarse sieve.
  • Season the sangrita with salt and pepper and chill for at least 20 minutes or overnight.
  • Pour into glasses.

White Drink: Blanco Tequila

This is the easy part!

Ingredient

  • 1 bottle blanco/white/silver Tequila

Preparation

  • Just pour white tequila into the glass.

Blanco or white Tequila is called “silver” Tequila by some producers.

Blue Drink: Blue Margarita

Ingredients

  • 10 ounces blanco/white/silver Tequila
  • 5 ounces blue Curaçao
  • 2-½ ounces triple sec
  • 5 ounces fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • Extra lime juice or wedges to rim
    glasses
  •  2-½ teaspoons simple syrup
  •  Coarse salt: sea salt or kosher salt
  • Ice

Preparation

  • Dip rims of cocktail glasses in lime juice, then in salt. (You can also rub a wedge of lime around the rims.)
  • Shake Tequila, blue Curaçao, triple sec, simple syrup and lime juice with ice.
  • Strain into glasses.

A blue Margarita completes the trio.

Drinking technique: Have a sip of Tequila (white) followed by the sangrita (red) followed by the Margarita (blue).
