Overview: Why A Chip Made From Beans?

Doug Foreman, founder and former CEO of Guiltless Gourmet, and his brother Dave, started their new company, Bean Brand Foods, to develop healthy snacks that don’t rely on corn. They’ve recently launched their first product: Beanitos, a snack chip made from black or pinto beans. Intrigued by the concept, we tried Beanitos and were very pleasantly surprised.

Guiltless Gourmet brought the first baked tortilla chips to mass market to great success. After Doug sold Guiltless Gourmet, the brothers wanted to push the chip still further. They decided make a corn-free chip with a healthier profile that to appealed to a nation of chip lovers who are also seeking healthier alternatives.

The American diet is full of corn products. There’s high-fructose corn syrup in everything from soft drinks to pasta sauces, cornbread, tortillas—and of course, the high-corn diet fed to fatten up the beef cattle that end up on our plates.

Beanitos are different because they’re bean-based, and not corn-based. They’re baked, not fried.

Healthier, More Protein, Fiber & Omega 3s

The chips currently come in two black bean and two pinto bean flavors: Black Bean, Black Bean Chipotle BBQ, Pinto Bean & Flax and Pinto Bean Cheddar. They’re made with only a handful of high-quality ingredients we have no trouble pronouncing: whole beans, whole grain rice, vegetable oil and sea salt, plus guar gum, a thickening agent made from ground guar beans. Pinto Bean & Flax Beanitos also contain flaxseeds, which double the Omega 3 content over the Black Bean varieties (1,200 mg versus 600 mg per ounce).

After they’re baked, the chips are flash fried and packaged. Beanitos are free of corn, gluten, soy and wheat, and they’re also vegan, sugar-free and low-glycemic. The bean base makes Beanitos are high in fiber, with 4 to 5 grams per serving. In addition to all those great Omega 3s, they provide provide complete protein.

  • At 140 to 150 calories an ounce, 7g to 8g fat, 5g fiber and 4g of protein, Beanitos are a much healthier alternative to the average ounce of potato chips.
  • Compare: Potato chips weigh in at 150 calories, 11 grams of fat, (including 3g of saturated fat), 1g fiber and 2g protein—not to mention the 149mg of sodium and 14g carbohydrates.
  • Low glycemic index: a GI of 33 and a GL of 3.

And did we mention that Beanitos taste great?
