Margarita Recipes

LiqueurThese recipes marry the classic Margarita with Midori melon liqueur. Originally produced in Japan, the word midori  is Japanese for “green,” an appropriate name for this brightly colored liqueur with honeydew notes. Production of Midori moved to Mexico in 1987, so it makes perfect sense to pair it with that quintessentially Mexican spirit, tequila—an unusual pairing in the culinary world, perhaps, but with delicious results.

These Margarita recipes are courtesy of Midori. Learn the history of the Margarita and many variations of the Margarita cocktail. See other Midori cocktail recipes.

Spicy Yubari Margarita Cocktail

Yubari is a city in the Hokkaido prefecture of Japan, known for Yubari melons, which look very similar to the common cantaloupe—except that in Japan, perfectly round Yubari melons cost a pretty penny. A Yubari melon is a popular thank-you gift to friends or a gift to bosses.

Sold in the food section of large department stores, Yubari melons can command 15,000 yen ($152). A perfectly round melon with a smooth skin netting pattern and optimal sweetness can cost more than 20,000 yen ($202). That’s for one melon. The wooden gift crate is extra.

Ingredients Per Cocktail

  • 1 ounce melon liqueur
  • 1-1/2 ounces reposado tequila
  • 2-3 thin slices fresh jalapeño
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Optional: red chile or red bell
    pepper wheel for garnish

Preparation

  1. Combine ingredients in a shaker
    and shake.
  2. Pour over ice in a Margarita glass.
  3. Garnish and serve.
