Day Of The Dead Chocolate Skulls
El Dia De Los Muertos Es El Día De Chocolate

Perfect For Halloween, Too

CAPSULE REPORT: Since pre-Colombian times, Mexicans have celebrated El Día de los Muertos, a ritual in which the living remember their departed relatives. From October 31 through November 2, graves are tended and decorated with ofrendas, offerings, and families expect a visit from loved ones who have passed.
Ofrendas dedicated to the deceased, usually foods and beverages, are also put in homes on elaborately decorated altars with glowing votive candles, photos, chocolate and sugar skull heads (calaveritas).
Delicious solid chocolate skulls are available from Vosges Haut Chocolat—perhaps the best calaveritas one can hope to find, in three flavors, each with sparkling, edible, black-glitter-coated eyes.
  - Blanca: White chocolate, 33% cocoa butter

  - Barcelona: 41% “deep” milk chocolate with hickory smoked almonds and grey sea salt

  - Red Fire: 55% semisweet chocolate with ancho and chipotle chillies and Ceylon cinnamon

The Red Fire is the most true to the ancient Maya and Aztec spiced chocolate beverage; the Barcelona is an interpretation of modern Mexican chocolate, which is flavored with ground almonds; and the white is the most skull-like, and a treat for white chocolate-lovers. There’s no dispute: try one of each!
Each skull is 2.2 ounces about 3" x 1.75" x 1") and individually packaged in a clear bag and tied with black ribbon.
