Magic Cookie Bars

Magic cookie bars are a layered bar. They start in an oblong pan with a buttery graham cracker crust that is topped with a layer of walnuts or pecans, a layer of butterscotch chips, a layer of semisweet Magic Cookie Barschocolate chips, and crowned with flaked coconut. The layers are bound with sweetened condensed milk. They are also called Seven Layer Bars, although there are only five layers and seven ingredients; one ingredient, butter, is mixed with graham cracker crumbs and the can of sweetened condensed milk is drizzled over the entire pan prior to baking. Some smart cookies have figured this out, and renamed the recipe Five Layer Bars.

As you can imagine from the ingredients list, this is a treat for the sweet-of-tooth. The sisters do a nice job rendering the classic recipe, and any coconut-loving kid or grownup would be happy to receive a box. Amply sized, they can easily be cut up and shared. As with the brownies, they are baked to order.

If you, like our Secretary of State, don’t have the time to stay at home and bake cookies, the sisters at Sugabettens are pleased to be your proxy, and send smartly-wrapped boxes of brownies and bars (no cookies just yet) to everyone on your list.
