Mari's New York Brownies

Mari’s New York classic brownies are available with or without walnuts. Or try one of the other eight flavors. Shown in photo, clockwise from bottom: Blonde Bombshell, Coconut, Sugar & Spice, Cranberry Cognac and Thai Coffee. Photography by Emily Chang | THE NIBBLE.

WHAT IT IS: Gourmet chocolate brownies and blondies in “petite” sizes, so you can indulge without guilt.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: The fine assortment of flavors made of top-quality ingredients are portion-controlled, and we love that! Now, a brownie a day can keep the doctor away—assuming your doctor prescribes seratonin reuptake inhibitors.
WHY WE LOVE IT: We can fit these brownies into a diet; but more importantly, they’re a perfect dessert with coffee when, after a big dinner, you want dessert but don’t have much room for it. They’re a great snack too, just the right size.

Gourmet Brownie “Signature” Flavors

We loved all of the flavors Mari makes, and are comforted that the seven “signature” flavors available year-round include such special varieties.

Coconut BrownieClockwise from bottom: Coconut, Blonde Bombshell, Sugar and Spice, Cranberry Cognac.

Blonde Bombshell

This classic blondie delights the palate. The small size leaves a very high chocolate chunk to cake ratio. The top is dusted with turbinado sugar,* which provides a crystalline garnish and a nice dimension of crunch, without a lot of sweetness.

*See all the different types of sugar in our Sugar Glossary.

Caramel Sea Salt

A swirl of lovely, gooey caramel, not too sweet, weaves through the chocolate brownie. A pinch of Cyprian sea salt makes a lovely sweet-and-salty counterpoint.

Classic Brownie

Lots of chocolate goodness, without nuts.

Classic Brownie With Nuts

Lots of chocolate goodness with a surface of roasted, chopped walnuts.

Coconut

A light topping of hand-shaved, lightly-toasted coconut, with some mixed into the batter, gives a completely different personality to Classic Brownie. As with all of the flavors, Mari works with a subtle hand. It’s not overwhelmingly coconut, just the right amount.

Heat

Smoky ancho and chipotle peppers are an excellent pairing with chocolate. The heat is a mild sizzle that dances on the tongue long after the brownie has been consumed. The little kick is charming. Don’t call the fire department: A glass of milk or a cup of coffee is just perfect.

Thai Coffee

A strong jolt of java gives energy to this sophisticated flavor. Coffee lovers will be enchanted, and even those who don’t drink coffee will admire the contrast.
