Green Tea Latte With Matcha Tea
A green tea latte is made with matcha tea. Matcha is a powdered green tea with the consistency of talc that is used in the Japanese tea ceremony, or cha no yu.
Powdered tea is the original way in which tea was prepared in Japan: The steeping of dried tea leaves in boiling water didn’t begin until the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The leaves for matcha are ground like flour in a stone mill. The powder is then whisked into water.
Matcha tea has a wonderful aroma, a creamy, silky froth and a rich, mellow taste. It contains a higher amount of nutrients (vitamins, minerals, L-theanine amino acids, polyphenols, chlorophyll and fiber) than other teas, including steeped green tea. Learn more about matcha in our Tea Glossary.

Green Tea Latte Recipe
A green tea latte can be enjoyed at any time of day.
Ingredients Per Serving
- 1 teaspoon of matcha
- 1/3 cup of warm-hot, but not boiling, water
- 8 ounces warm-hot milk, soy milk or almond milk—don’t boil the milk, either
(Kiley likes almond milk because it has only has 80 calories and delivers a sweet taste!)
- Optional: 1 teaspoon raw honey, agave or sugar substitute
(we prefer the drink unsweetened)
- Optional: milk foam for garnish

- Small whisk
- Optional: Aerolatte or milk frother (we use Nespresso’s Aeroccino)
- Whisk matcha and water in a small bowl until the tea is dissolved and
the top slightly foams.
- Stir in sweetener.
- Add warm milk to the top of the drink, filling the cup.
- For a frothier drink, pulse in a blender or use a frothing wand like Aerolatte. If you have a milk frother, froth the warm milk, then pour.
- For an iced drink, prepare recipe to step 3; then add 2-3 ice cubes and mix in a blender.
Enjoy as is or serve with delicate French macaroons for a special treat. You can also make green tea shortbread.
