Les Madeleines Patisserie, Salt Lake City

Anyone passing through Salt Lake City should be certain to stop at Les Madeleines Patisserie and Café at 216 East 500 South. There, owner and pastry chef Romina Kouign AmanRasmussen has been practicing pastry magic since 2003. A native of Salt Lake City, she trained at the French Culinary Institute and lived on both coasts and in the Pacific Rim before returning home. Salt Lake City is lucky indeed—it’s hard to find pastry this fine in top foodie towns!

These two delicious photos of kouign aman were taken by Vanessa Chang of Salt Lake City, who recommend this delicious breakfast pastry to THE NIBBLE.

We ordered a small gift box of four kouign aman pastries from Les Madeleines, and Kouign Amanregret we didn’t order the large box. Although overnight shipping is steep, we’d do it again, and send it as a luxurious gift to any deserving person, starting with our mother—a baker and pastry connoisseur if there ever was one—for Mother’s Day.

It looks so simple, but it tastes divine.

The pastries were just as delicious the second day after arrival (and, alas, not a crumb was left beyond then). We’re planning a pastry layover in S.L.C. the next time we fly to L.A.

If you want to bake your own kouign aman, you can find a recipe here, as well as a photo, for a larger version.
