Bloody Mary Recipe Variations

The whole world loves a Bloody Mary. Here are some international-inspired recipes.

Danish Mary

  • 2 ounces top-quality tomato juice
  • 1-1/2 ounces aquavit
  • 6 shakes Tabasco Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly-ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon grated onion
  • Sprig of fresh dill

Combine the first six ingredients, mix well; pour over ice in a tall glass and garnish with the dill.

 

Highland Mary (a.k.a. Bloody Scotsman)

  • 2 ounces top-quality tomato juice
  • 1-1/2 ounces Scotch whiskey
  • 6 shakes Tabasco Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly-ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon grated onion
  • 1 sprig of fresh rosemary, slightly crushed

Combine the first six ingredients, mix well; pour over ice in a tall glass and garnish with the rosemary, crushed slightly to release its flavor.

More “British” variations—which may have been invented in the U.S.—include:

  • Bloody Maureen: Replace vodka with Guinness
  • Bloody Molly: Replace vodka with Irish whiskey
  • Brown Mary: Replace vodka with any whiskey

Russian Mary

  • 2 ounces top-quality tomato juice
  • 2 ounces top-shelf vodka
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt (regular or nonfat)
  • 6 shakes Tabasco Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly-ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon grated onion
  • 1 sprig of parsley

Combine the first seven ingredients, mix well; pour over ice in a tall glass and garnish with the parsley.

More International Marys

The world loves a “Mary”—so much that one could open a bar serving only variations on the theme. Here are more ideas:

  • Bloody Bishop:  Replace vodka with sherry.
  • Bloody Fairy: Replace vodka with absinthe.
  • Bloody Geisha: Replace vodka with saké.

We haven’t captured every variety of Mary in this article: Creativity knows no bounds, including frozen Marys, flaming Marys, white Marys (without tomato juice) and Marys that sound like science experiments gone wrong (the Screw Mary, a Screwdriver/Bloody Mary fusion drink with vodka, orange juice and tomato juice, “spiced to taste,” whatever that could be).
