Product Reviews / Diet Nibbles / Diet Jams & SpreadsLa Nouba Sugar-Free Fruit SpreadsFull-Flavored & Fabulous Fruit Preserves
Those whose intake of sugar is restricted find themselves searching for good substitutes. One of the toughest to find is a tasty jar of intensely fruit-flavored, natural-tasting, sugar-free preserves. Among the best we’ve had are made by La Nouba, a Belgian manufacturer of chocolates and confitures that uses maltitol, the most natural-tasting of the sugar substitutes. The “fruit spreads” are among the stars of the La Nouba line, made of 55% fruit picked at such a degree of ripeness that no one will notice the sugar substitute. Consumers of regular jams may even prefer the lack of cloying sweetness (although maltitol can have a laxative effect when eaten in large quantities; so, tempting as it might be to eat the entire jar of delicious contents with a spoon—don’t). In addition to complementing toast, muffins, and a peanut butter sandwich, these preserves are marvelous when stirred into yogurt, or as a topping for ice cream. Try them with Breyers CarbSmart, Sugar Smart, or other sugar-free ice cream. The cherry and raspberry La Nouba preserves are great with vanilla or chocolate ice cream. Or, put a spoonful of cherry preserves into a glass of tea, Russian-style. Or, top a stack of pancakes. You’ll have fun with these preserves. Happy jamming!
