Sucré: A Gourmet Chocolate Collection For Every Palate

CAPSULE REPORT: Visitors tend to bring back pralines from New Orleans. But sophisticated palates should eschew the overly-sweet pralines and bring back Sucré chocolates.

This charming confectionary café makes bonbons in flavors and designs to suit every taste. While you can pick and choose from the big glass case, online buyers have an easier task of deciding among 13 different collections. Each of them is pretty tempting, but an easy choice at this time of year is the For The Love Of Chocolate collection. Please your Valentine with this box of shimmering red-glazed chocolate hearts filled with raspberry ganache. Or, surprise him or her with tickets to Mardi Gras and the Carnival or New Orleans collections. Read the full review below.

Sucre Overview

Sucré (the French word for “sugared”) is a confectioner that features quite a list of appealing items, including French macaroons in a variety of flavors (some seasonally-based) and oh-so-southern Candied Pecans. There are Vanilla Bean Marshmallows and, in colder months, a very thick and hearty Drinking Chocolate.

And did I mention the filled chocolates?

You’ll find a dozen or so “collections” on the website, ranging from the Tea Time (Earl Grey tea, black tea, and chai chocolates) to No Cream Truffles and Coconut Truffles to the New Orleans Collection, five flavors beloved by all good denizens of “N’Awlins,” including Bananas Foster, brown butter and chicory coffee.  There’s also a Carnival Collection with Southern pecan praline, crème brûlée and Bananas Foster chocolates.

Most of the collections are available in varying sizes (6, 15 or 21 pieces), so it’s easy to try a small sampling of two or three—it’s not easy to narrow down 13 tempting choices to one box.

Three of the five pieces in the Indulge Collection: From top, Wedding Cake, Peanut Butter & Jelly and Malted Milk Palet D’or.

I tried both the Voyage and Indulge Collections and am tempted to order the Meuniere chocolates, filled with brown butter and white chocolate ganache.

  • The Grand Coeur is a dark chocolate heart with milk chocolate ganache that’s infused with orange and triple sec; the lively orange and boozy flavor in the milk chocolate center is very appealing.
  • The Gianduja Crunch is an inspired chocolate-hazelnut coupling.
  • The Pistachio is a rolled sicilian pistachio and white chocolate ganache; the cinnamon is a nice touch, as is the hand-painted white chocolate plaquette on top.
  • For Valentine’s Day there’s the For The Love Of Chocolate Collection, a box of shimmering red heart-shaped shells filled with dark chocolate ganache that’s blended with sweet red raspberries.

What else? Bars and barks and cookies, oh, my! The packaging has a happy, modern look. If you’re in the area, the boutique is at 3025 Magazine Street in New Orleans. The online photo of it makes me want to hop a plane down to The Big Easy!
