Specialty Foods

Alice’s Stick Cookies:

Here’s inspiration for Mom: Alice Larse became an entrepreneur at age 70, after her son brought samples of the cookies she’d been baking for 15 years to Draeger’s specialty food store in Menlo Park, California. The enthusiasm of the store’s employees led to a business and a trade award for 70. In 2006, Alice’s Stick Cookies won a prestigious trade award for “Best Cookie Or Cracker.” Now available in Cinnamon Ginger, Lemon, Orange Chocolate Chip and Original Vanilla, the “stick cookies” are shortbread-like with hints of toffee in a long, slender rectangular shape.

  • Alice’s Stick Cookies

    Orange-Chocolate Chip & Original

Choose (or try to choose!) among Apple Butter, Apple Pie, Cinnamon Maple, Maple Praline (our favorite), Peach Cobbler, Roasted Pecan or Roasted Walnut, Strawberry, Toasted Almond, Wild Blueberry (another favorite), and Whole Blackberry or Whole Raspberry.

California Caviar:

Treat mom to a bacon-and-egg breakfast using not hen’s eggs, but fish eggs— a.k.a. caviar. California Caviar’s latest product is bacon-flavored trout caviar (one of our favorite roes). Try poached eggs on toast or Eggs Benedict topped with some smoky, bacony trout roe. The website also has a recipe for Baked Oysters With Bacon & Leeks Topped with Bourbon Trout Roe that will allow Mom to indulge on her special day.

  • Bacon-Infused Trout Roe
    1 Ounce
    $15.00

Comfort Crunch:

Fruit & Nut Mix

Delicious fruit and nut mixes—most with a bit of chocolate tossed in—hit the spot. And part of the profits go to cancer research that will hopefully provide comfort to many, including the founder who found herself with cancer (now in remission). Available in Ginger In A Snap, Original, Pepita Pick-Me-Up and Toffee Talk. Check out our review of Comfort Crunch.

Celebration Generation:

Spiced Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Mix

If Mom doesn’t bake as much as she used to, here’s a great time saver. Celebration Generation’s spiced oatmeal cookie mix, our favorite flavor, tastes just like grandma used to make (the grandma who was the good cook).

Mama’s Goodies:

Butter Nut Crunch

Here’s something special: lighter than toffee, flavored with honey and maple syrup instead of refined sugar, and containing healthy nuts and seeds. Treat your mama to Mama’s Butter Nut Crunch flavors that include Almond, Cashews, Macadamia, Pecan and Sesame Seeds. The all-natural crunches are lovely for snacking and even for dessert (add some pieces to chocolate, coffee or vanilla ice cream).

The Cheese Ambassador:
Gourmet Cheese Course
Collections

Cheese-loving moms will appreciate a cheese sampler from The Cheese Ambassador. The small-batch, artisanal cheeses are nicely presented in gift boxes. We preferred the American Artisanal Cheeses; but if you’re feeling generous, send both and let Mom make her own decision. Each comes with “a cheese course guide for effortless entertaining” with beverage recommendations and serving tips. But we bet Mom is tempted not to share.

    Cave-Aged Blue Cheese

  • Mediterranean Cheeses

Sarabeth’s Kitchen:
Blood Orange Marmalade

The first of Sarabeth’s “Special Reserve” flavors, this special edition is made only during the limited harvesting season of the California blood orange. It’s an award winner and a best seller. The intense orange flavor is so good, it may disappear from the jar before it ever sees a piece of toast. Hand-cut blood oranges and paired with apricots and pineapple, slowly simmered in small batches. In addition to a bread spread, use the marmalade on ice cream, in tart shells or as a glaze for poultry.

Slap Ya Mama:
Cajun Seasoning

We love this product for its name. But if ya mama enjoys the joke, she’ll also get a canister of Cajun seasoning, made in Louisiana. The award-winning spice mixes can be used on almost anything, from eggs to popcorn to seafood to French fries. The name was born when the creator of the seasoning joked, “When you use this seasoning, the food tastes so good that it will make you want to go home and slap ya mama because she could never make something taste that great.” There are three additions to the Original Blend: Hot Blend, Mixed Seasoning and White Pepper Blend. There are other products, including Étouffée Sauce and Hot Pepper Sauce. And of course, aprons, hats and tee shirts.
