Blueberry Cocktails

A Dozen Drinks With New Stoli® Blueberi™

Today, one out of four drinks poured in the U.S. is vodka-based. But vodka is a drink that only began to get noticed in the mid 1970s. In 1965, the first bottles of Stolichnaya appeared in the United States at select retail stores in Brooklyn. It was the first imported premium vodka. Stolichnaya also is the flavored vodka originator: Stoli Ohranj™ was introduced to the U.S. in 1986. After Americans fell in love with flavored vodka, it was followed by (in alphabetical order) Citros™, Cranberi™, Persik™ (pear), Razberi™, Strasberi™ and Vanil™, all 70-proof. Now, twenty years after the debut of the first flavored vodka, the eighth flavor, Blueberi debuts...appropriately enough, in summer blueberry season.

Stolichnaya VodkaVodka originated in the 12th century, purportedly at an isolated fort called Viakta. It was originally called zhiznennia voda, meaning “water of life.” By the 16th century, vodka had become so popular in Russia that the British ambassador to Moscow referred to it as the Russian national drink.

Today, Stolichnaya is the world’s best-selling vodka.* Stolichnaya is Russian for “capital city.” The building on the label of the classic vodka is the Moscova Hotel in Moscow, built in 1932 by Stalin. It originally housed the city’s first subway station. Stolichnaya employs a 500-year-old double-distillation method and a quadruple charcoal to remove impurities. The flavored vodkas are made using a natural infusion process prior to filtration (other flavored vodkas can use syrups).

*Stolichnaya is the number-two imported brand in the U.S., behind Sweden’s Absolut. Absolut created the American preference for vodka with its brilliant ad campaign, which broke in June, 1979. The #3 and #4 U.S. imports are Ketel One and Grey Goose.

The crystal-clear vodka is smooth enough to drink all by itself (ice-cold of course), but those in pursuit of new and exciting cocktails will find lots to play with. In tandem with a product launch at DIFFA, The Design Industries Foundation Fighting Age, Stolichnaya invited fashion designers to create cocktails. Here are their creations, along with some old standards made new with blueberry vodka.
