Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie

Go bananas with Primal Seduction: bananas dipped in peanut butter and toffee with white chocolate chunks. All photography by Corey Lugg | THE NIBBLE.

WHAT IT IS: Very seductive chocolate chocolate chunk cookies.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Nine different chocolate chocolate chunk cookies, ranging from “comfort” flavors (banana/peanut butter/toffee, caramel, cream cheese) to sophisticated (curry, ginger, sea salt).
WHY WE LOVE IT: These cookies are so good; while the website focuses on the word “rich,” because this seems to sell gourmet foods, we prefer to think of them as perfect. Rich implies that if you eat several, you’ll feel ill. Here, you can eat several and feel overjoyed.

Ruby et Violette: Chocolate Chunk Seduction Cookies

CAPSULE REPORT: We’ve been seduced by many of the Top Picks Of The Week, but Ruby et Violette’s “Seduction” chocolate chunk cookies at least give fair warning. After we devoured the cookies in record time, THE NIBBLE staff unanimously decided to give a box to our significant others for Valentine’s Day—just so we could have another opportunity to devour them all over again!

The brainstorm of the Mercer sisters, whose repertoire includes more than 100 flavors of chocolate chunk cookies, Seduction comprises nine chocolate cookies with different combinations of dark chocolate chunks and flavors: banana/peanut butter/toffee, caramel, cream cheese, curry, ginger, mint, rocky road, sea salt and “plain” chocolate chunk. The flavors can be ordered individually or in any combination you like (we bought one of each) and are packaged in a beautiful “keeper” box.

Yet, rich as the cookies may sound, the recipes are so perfectly crafted that you can eat all nine flavors (or at least divide each one among your colleagues) without needing so much as a glass of milk. That’s great baking!

With this Top Pick, Ruby et Violette takes the gold medal as the only three-peat Top Pick Of The Week winner (check out the rainbow of chocolate chunk cookies and the gorgeous brownies). And the company’s phenomenal ice cream is earmarked for Top Pick number four.

Introduction To Ruby et Violette

Ruby et Violette is certainly a specialist. The company deals in only one thing: chocolate chunks (the larger, rectangular version of chocolate chips). And the company doesn’t mess around—the chunks are the best, from Belgian chocolate producer Callebaut.

Company owners Heather Sue, Jennifer and Rebekah Mercer make cookies (more than 100 flavors!), brownies and ice cream laden with these celestial chunks. Anyone who has ever bitten into a chocolate chip/chunk cookie will immediately taste the difference.

It’s not just the chocolate, of course; it’s the quality and freshness of the butter and eggs, the vanilla and other flavorings, the proportion of white to brown sugar, and everything else that makes a great cookie recipe.

And then there are the chocolate chocolate chunk cookies. What would you expect from a company that makes 100 different flavors of cookies but nine flavors of chocolate chocolate chunk marvels, so enticing that together they form a collection called Seduction Cookies. That’s a sexier title than Borg* Cookies, but either way, resistance is futile. Read more about the cookies on the next page.

Mint Chocolate Chip Cookie

Cool Seduction cookies: White chocolate chunks and mint make for a cool seduction, indeed.

*The Borg are an assimilated race of cyborgs in the “Star Trek” science fiction franchise. As they overpower weaker people, they use the catchphrase, “resistance is futile.”

If you’re in New York City, visit the company’s little café at 457 West 50th Street (closed Mondays); otherwise, head to the website and order away! (Yes, even the ice cream can be ordered, and it’s well, well worth it!)
