Saratoga Specialties Company

Chocolate, Bacon & Potato Chip Cup

This young company, which revived the original potato chip, Saratoga Chips, along with excellent dip mixes, has added chocolate to its list. The Chocolate Trifecta looks like a bumpy peanut butter cup, but is a blend of milk chocolate, crumbled potato chips and bacon. There’s a good strong bacon presence here, with a modest crunch from the potato chips. Because these cups are garnished with salt crystals and contain bacon and potato chips, they are definitely on the salty side. OriginalSaratogaChips.com

Sir Francis Bacon Peanut Brittle
[FAVORITE]

Chocolate Bacon Peanut Brittle

This tasty treat has long been a NIBBLE favorite and a Top Pick Of The Week. The Chocolate Peanut Brittle is a square of about one and a half inches by roughly half an inch high. Crunchy and thick with peanuts, you taste peanut and caramelized sweetness plus the milk chocolate coating, all fading to a lovely smoky, salty bacon presence. It’s a terrific flavor balance. There is also a delicious bacon peanut brittle available without chocolate. Watch for the introduction of the company’s new Bacon Toffee Bar (enrobed in dark chocolate). While it is not yet available as of today’s publication date, it may be by the time you read this. BaconPeanutBrittle.com

Snake & Butterfly

Chocolate Bacon Bar & Caramels

The Maple Syrup & Bacon Brittle Bar is attractively imprinted with the company’s name and logo. The bar has a slight crunch and bright notes of both sweet and salt from the brittle. The Maple & Bacon Caramels have a nice degree of chewiness, with both texture and some flavor from the bacon in the caramel. They’re enrobed in chocolate and dusted with red Hawai’ian alaea salt. My difficulty with these products is that, for my tastes, the particular couverture chocolate used doesn’t blend well with the other components.

Socola Chocolates

Chocolate Bacon Truffles

Socola has thrown its hat into the chocolate-bacon ring with the Notorious H.O.G. Truffle (gotta love the name!). This is a smallish cube, atop which one corner is garnished with a chipotle-sea salt blend. The interior dark chocolate ganache has a little texture from small bits of bacon. But there was very little bacon flavor, though the garnish gives a hint of smokiness and some salt along with its heat. SocolaChocolates.com

240 Sweet

Chocolate Bacon Marshmallows

There are several companies that have created a bacon-chocolate marshmallow. 240Sweet’s entry into the field is the Bacon Chocolate Chip, a vanilla “mallow” with miniature chocolate chips and bits of cooked, crumbled bacon on two opposite sides of the marshmallow cube. The bacon and chocolate pair well, but you get a flavor of mostly marshmallow, with a few dark chocolate/bacon highlights. 240Sweet.com

The Yellow Leaf Cupcake Company

Chocolate Bacon Cupcakes

First the good news: The Chocolate Bacon Cupcake at this shop is the best product of its type I’ve tasted. The chocolate cupcake has crumbled, cooked bacon inside. More bacon is sprinkled both underneath and on top of a chocolate ganache frosting. Now for the bad news: This business does not ship cupcakes, period! You’ll have to plan a trip to Seattle—a great food  city. Call before you go, as this flavor isn’t made every day. We rarely write about products that aren’t accessible to  most readers, but this cupcake is just too good not to mention. TheYellowLeafCupcake.com

Vosges Haut-Chocolat

Chocolate Bacon Bar

This Chicago-based chocolatier (with several shops in other cities) is the possible originator and probably the best-known example of a chocolate-bacon bar, I tried Mo’s Bacon Bar in both the milk and dark chocolate versions. Both contain bits of very crisp bacon; I found that the milk chocolate used didn’t blend well with the bacon flavor, while the dark chocolate here overwhelmed the bacon taste—although the alternately smooth-and-crunchy textures of both bars were enjoyable.

Mo’s Bacon Chocolate Chip Pancake Mix is a buttermilk pancake mix (you supply the buttermilk and a few other ingredients) packaged with a bag of large chocolate “chips” with crunchy bacon in them. You can layer the chips between cooked pancakes (this method worked well for me) or sprinkle them onto the uncooked side of the pancake just prior to flipping (on my griddle, this tended to result in scorched chocolate). I found the pancake mix too salty to be enjoyable, and the instructions were unnecessarily complex. VosgesChocolate.com

Xocolatl de David [RUNNER UP]

Chocolate Bacon Caramel Bar

Of the four pieces I tried from this Portland, Oregon chocolatier, the one I liked best was the Bacon & Chocolate Bar, a very dark chocolate accented with chewy caramel and a finish of crunchy and chewy bacon. I also tried the Raleigh Bar with Bacon, an elegantly crafted small candy bar in which a layer of chocolate pecan honey nougat is topped with bacon caramel, then enrobed in very dark chocolate; a Bacon Caramel; and a Bacon Chocolate. If you like your chocolate with a very high percentage cacao (that is, quite bittersweet), I wouldn’t hesitate to try these products. XocolatlDeDavid.com
