Gluten Free Granola

The granola is as much of a sweet treat as the brownies. Photography by Katharine Pollak | THE NIBBLE.

WHAT IT IS: Gourmet brownies and granola that are gluten-free.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Our tasters didn’t realize the brownies were gluten-free!
WHY WE LOVE IT: The granola is as satisfying as candy or trail mix. While we’ll still go for the wheat-and butter-based brownie, we’ll never refuse one of Deb’s.

Granola Overview

Granola is a breakfast food and snack food, originally consisting of rolled oats, nuts and honey (see the history of granola). Over the years, dried fruits and other ingredients have been added to add more flavor and texture. Different sweeteners were substituted. The recipes are now endless.

Our view is that granola as a breakfast cereal shouldn’t taste like trail mix or candy, but should taste healthy with the flavor of whole grains—like the rolled oats cereal from which it is made (see more about whole grain cereal).

Deb’s Farmhouse Kitchen Granola

For us, Deb’s Farmhouse Kitchen Granola is more of a snack food than a breakfast cereal. It’s filled with lots of dried fruit, which makes it very sweet. We’d love to see a fruit-free version for breakfast, but we did enjoy the granolas as a healthier substitute for candy.

The two current flavors are made with gluten-free rolled oats. (While oats are gluten-free, many are processed on the same machinery or in the same building as wheat, enabling cross-contamination.)

We added raspberries for some sweet-tart flavor.

Both are packed with dried fruit, making them sweet enough for a snack, an ice cream or dessert topping.

  • Cherry Almond Granola has almonds, brown sugar, organic maple syrup, sunflower oil, sweetened dried cherries, sweetened dried cranberries, sugar, cinnamon and sea salt.
  • Oatmeal Cookie-Ola has almonds, pistachios, cranberries and maple syrup. There is so much sweet dried fruit that it resembles trail mix.

Between the brownies and the granola, those with a sweet tooth will be delighted with Deb’s products.
