Vanilla Ice Cream

Create a stunning dessert by using a kitchen torch to brûlée the bottom of a dish—it’s the same crackly, burned sugar as you’d create on the top of a crème brûlée. Top with a scoop of ice cream and a counterpoint—here, candied macadamia nuts, but it could be one of Mari’s New York Brownies (they’re bite-size)—and a sprig of mint to garnish. WHAT IT IS: French-style artisan ice cream and sorbet.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Made in small batches from the freshest, finest ingredients. The goat’s milk flavors, which are healthier than cow’s milk, are rich and creamy with no “goaty” taste. You’ll be amazed.
WHY WE LOVE IT: The most exquisite flavors with traditional and unusual flavor choices (Caramel with Sea Salt, Lavender, Saffron).

Delicieuse French Artisanal Ice Cream: Maaad For It

CAPSULE REPORT: Looking for a way to put the zing into Christmas dinner? Still haven’t found that gift for someone special? Want to start the new year with something new and noteworthy? We know what we’d like: a big shipment of Patricia Sampson’s artisan ice creams—cow’s and goat’s milk. Patricia sells her products under the brand name Delicieuse French Ice Cream Artisanale, which is an understatement. Perhaps she felt that Merveilleuse or Magnifique was too boastful, so we’ll have to boast for her:

We’ve had the house-made ice cream at the finest restaurants in America—Citronelle, Gary Danko, Jean-Georges, Le Bec-Fin and Patina, to name a few—and Patricia Sampson’s can stand toe to toe with any of them. In fact, having tasted some 30 of her cow’s milk and goat’s milk ice creams and sorbets, we’d bet on her to win Top Ice Cream Chef.

And you’re a winner too, because while none of those great restaurants will overnight you a pint of whatever you’re dying to dig into (unless, perhaps, you’re the president-elect or other A-lister), you can order to your heart’s content at As you’ll read later in this review, while most goat’s milk ice cream has a distinct flavor, you’d never know that some of Delicieuse’s products are made of goat’s milk. (When tasting the goat’s and cow’s milk products side by side, we could taste a difference. But the difference didn’t say “goat,” just great.) That makes this exquisite-tasting ice cream a quadruple bonus for people who have high cholesterol or lactose intolerance: goat’s milk is lower in fat and calories and is more easily digested than cow’s milk. But make no mistake: We’re mad (or maaad) for the entire line—every flavor we tasted was superb. Read the full review below.

Overview Of Delicieuse French Ice Cream

If you’re headed to Redondo Beach, California, be sure it’s on the weekend. Because Delicieuse is only open Friday through Sunday. The rest of the week, Patricia Samson focuses on making her stunning ice creams...and you won’t want to miss them.

Ms. Sampson started out in the summer of 2005, sampling at farmers markets in Torrance, California and in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. Then, she had some three dozen flavors of French custard ice cream and sorbet; today, there is a repertoire of over 100 flavors.

Yes, you can have Banana, Chocolate, Coconut, Cinnamon, Coffee, Mango, Maple, Mint, Peanut Butter, Peach, Pistachio, Strawberry and Vanilla, but also Cognac, Earl Grey, Fig, Fromage Blanc, Lavender, Saffron, Salt Caramel and...Oak. (We haven’t had this limited-edition flavor yet and we can’t wait. It’s made from the sap of the oak tree, as maple flavor comes from the sap of the maple tree.)

There are also ten flavors of goat’s milk yogurt that alone are worth the trip. Even more exciting than the excellent cow’s milk ice creams, they have absolutely no goat’s milk taste—for reason’s we’ll soon reveal. Thus, you get amazing flavors that have less fat, fewer calories and greater digestibility for those with lactose intolerance or allergies to cow’s milk and soy milk.

The small-batch cow’s milk ice creams are made from milk, heavy cream, egg yolks, evaporated cane juice (a more nutritious alternative to refined sugar, also made from sugar cane but without the same degree of processing that refined sugar undergoes), natural flavors and less than 1% stabilizer (locust bean gum, carrageenan, guar gum, mono and diglycerides, sodium alginate, sodium dioxide). As there is no goat cream (goat’s milk has less fat), the goat’s milk ice creams use cream, goat’s milk, plus sunflower oil.

But ingredients seem almost irrelevant when one has the opportunity to taste something so celestial.
