Varieties To Stony Brook Cookies
Out of the ovens come four favorite varieties of drop cookies, all with chocolate chunks or chips: chocolate chip (Super Chocolate Chunk), chocolate chocolate chip (Double Chocolate Pecan), oatmeal (Oatmeal Cranberry & White Chocolate) and the “kitchen sink” (Stony Brook Jumble).
The cookies are generously proportioned—almost three inches in diameter. Topped with a scoop of ice cream, they make a killer dessert. They’re soft and moist, so they can easily be navigated with a spoon.
If you don’t know what a drop cookie is, by the way, digress for a moment and check out the eight basic types of cookies. Otherwise, move forward and imagine you’re taking a bite of each of Stony Brook’s offerings, here in alphabetical order.
Double Chocolate Pecan Cookie. We admit a fondness for “chocolate chocolate chip,” especially when made with the finest cocoa and chocolate, and when the chips have been supersized to chunks. We also prefer the mellowness of pecans to the bite of walnuts. Is this our favorite? Probably—we’re a chocoholic.

Oatmeal Cranberry & White Chocolate. It’s not that we don’t like a good oatmeal raisin cookie, but we like a cranberry raisin cookie even more. The white chocolate chunks make this sweeter than your typical oatmeal cookie, so if you go for oatmeal cookies because they’re less sweet than chocolate chip, this may not be your baby.
Stony Brook Jumble. There aren’t enough “kitchen sink” cookies around, in our opinion (another fine one is made by Top Pick Lisa’s Cookie Shop). This version has coconut, dried Montmorency cherries, toasted almonds and semisweet Callebaut chocolate chips. There’s a generous amount of chocolate chips in the cookies; the net effect is a coconut chocolate chip cookie with cherry accents. Historic note: an actual jumble cookie is a very hard nut cookie, flavored with vanilla, anise or caraway seed, that’s been around since the Middle Ages. They were very popular because they traveled well due to their very dense, hard nature, and could be stored for up to a year. One would never confuse the fresh, soft Stony Brook Jumble with an actual jumble cookie. Perhaps a name change is called for?
Super Chocolate Chunk. This is a best-seller, although we would reorder the other three instead. It’s not that there weren’t tons of chunks in a very fine cookie; it’s that we like our own recipe, which uses a higher proportion of brown sugar, more; and we don’t have a recipe anywhere near as good as the Double Chocolate Pecan and the Stony Brook Jumble.
If you have any concerns about overindulgence, remember that unknown sage who said, “A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand.”
