Whether you want espresso, French Roast or a mild American cup, you can find it in organic, Fair Trade coffee. Photo by Monkey Business | Dreamstime.

WHAT IT IS: Organic and/or Fair Trade coffee.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: These are some of the tastier roasts we tried for this article. No milk or sweetener is required to make these coffees divinely drinkable.
WHY WE LOVE IT: Complex aromas and flavors make these coffees stand out when drunk black. Those who add milk and/or sweetener cover up a lot of great flavor in a great coffee.
WHERE TO BUY IT: See individual listings.

Buffalo & Spring

S&D Coffee began roasting coffee in Concord, North Carolina, on Buffalo & Spring Streets. They chose the brand name Buffalo & Spring for their consumer line. In addition to organic and Fair Trade certifications, some of the proceeds from sales benefit Coffee Kids, an international nonprofit organization that helps improve the quality of the lives of coffee-farming families.

We only tried one of the many varieties offered by Buffalo & Spring, Organic Earth Song Blend. A medium roast with chocolate and red fruit notes and a clean, sweet finish, it should have broad appeal. The lively charm of the bronze metallic bag is an added bonus—it adds a bit of glamour, no matter what the time of day. The 2.75-ounce bags, which brew one pot, make great stocking stuffers.

Caffe Ibis

Caffe Ibis’s is triple-certified and quadruply helpful. In addition to organic and Fair Trade certifications, the coffee is certified Shade Grown, which preserves existing rainforests and ecosystems (also known as Bird Friendly, as it preserves their habitats).

Caffe Ibis is also part of the Cafe Femenino Coffee Project, which promotes the organization of women coffee farmers and their integration into social, political and occupational organizations. There are currently 464 women coffee farmers involved with the Project, enabling women—often isolated and mistreated physically, emotionally and financially—to gain a solid footing for themselves and their children.

Caffe Ibis offers almost three dozen different types and roasts. We tried only one, a Special Blend, Organic Cafe Femenino. It was a lighter-bodied American style that most American coffee drinkers will enjoy. There are plenty of organic dark roast choices for those who prefer them.

Equator Estate Coffees & Teas

Equator Coffee is a woman-owned roaster dedicated to environmental sustainability and social responsibility. The company procures distinctive coffees from growers who practice responsible land stewardship and bio-friendly farming techniques.

Among the company’s delicious-sounding offerings are two Mocha Java blends. The organic and Fair Trade version is a blend of Ethiopia Harrar beans from the Oromia cooperative, which contributes its signature earthy, full-bodied character with fruit and floral notes, plus Sumatra and other Indonesian coffee beans that provide more earth tones. It’s a lovely mocha java.
