Caffe Acapella Coffee Candy Bars: Chocolate Bar Sensuality For Coffee Lovers

CAPSULE REPORT: Many people love a good cup of coffee. And they love a good chocolate bar. So now, how about a coffee bar—not an eating establishment where you get a cup of coffee, but a coffee candy bar that’s cousin to the chocolate bar? After much experimentation, the founders of Caffe Acapella have created coffee candy bars that have the creamy texture of milk chocolate, without any chocolate ingredients. They're made from roasted coffee beans instead of roasted cacao bean (the basis of chocolate). Coffee lovers are going to love them.

But a creamy candy bar that melts on the tongue isn’t the only focus. The star of the show is the genuine coffee flavor of the Arabica coffee beans used to make the bars. With each new batch of beans, sample bars are produced for experts to taste test; with approval, the beans move ahead to production. Introduction

It’s no secret that chocolate and coffee have long been involved in an affair, pairing happily in sweets ranging from chocolate covered espresso beans to espresso chocolate chunk ice cream. But until now, no one managed to take a page from the chocolate bar play book. Why not a velvety smooth coffee candy bar that melts on the tongue, bite after bite, like a chocolate bar?

Mark Izzo and Kathy Niness, the founders of Caffe Acapella, hit upon the big idea for coffee to follow the path of chocolate from bitter beverage to much-cherished food. They invented the coffee candy bar. The all-natural bars look like chocolate bars, but get close and you’ll be captivated by the unmistakable aroma of coffee. Get closer and you’ll get the caffeine: A single bar has the caffeine equivalent of about two cups of coffee. It’s a perfect pick-me-up for the mid-afternoon slump.*

*Not all coffee candy contains caffeine. It depends on whether the candy is made with real or artificial coffee flavor.

It took perhaps 3,300 years until the chocolate beverage became “eating chocolate,” as the chocolate bar was first known—the Olmecs started drinking chocolate around 1500 B.C.E., and the first rough, grainy chocolate bars were produced as recently as 1847 (see the history of chocolate and the chocolate timeline.)

It looks like a chocolate bar, but it smells and tastes like coffee.

While no one knows when coffee cultivation and brewing began, excavations in the Ethiopian highlands indicate that humans have been eating the sweet coffee berries (called cherries) for thousands of years. But cultivation and brewing probably didn’t begin until at least the 6th century, C.E. (see the history of coffee). Thus, it’s taken far less time for coffee to get from brew to bar.

Acapella refers to singing without instrumental accompaniment.
