Silver Moon Desserts Overview

What happens when you add liqueur and/or spirits to ice cream and sorbet? In the latter case, you get something in the spirit of a great frozen drink; in the former, a wonderfully enhanced ice cream.

That’s the concept of Silver Moon Desserts, a new company founded in Los Angeles that was one of the outstanding products of the many thousands shown at the Winter 2009 Fancy Food Show. A line of frozen desserts that can be enjoyed by everyone—even though you have to be 21 to purchase them because of the amount of real alcohol in the recipe—this company has put sophisticated fun into ice cream and sorbet.

Note that when we refer to the “amount of real alcohol,” it’s only the various state liquor authorities that deem ice cream that contains real alcohol serious enough to require proof of age. It’s impossible to ingest enough liquor to get the most remote buzz from; we’ve bought fruit cakes that contain more alcohol (and no I.D. required). The spirits in these recipes are an elegant accent, not the equivalent of frozen cocktail recipes. If you eat 10 pints you might have a frozen kisser, but you’ll be able to drive or operate heavy equipment unimpaired.
