WHAT IT IS: Top-quality frozen gourmet tarts.
WHY IT’S DIFFERENT: Pastry chef-quality tarts, ready to thaw and serve.
WHY WE LOVE IT: (1) Always at the ready. (2) We create the garnish (several are suggested on the box) and that’s like creating the dish, isn’t it? As Daphne says, “We do the work, you take the credit.” The slim boxes fit easily into the freezer.

Queen Of Tarts: We Crown Daphne Baking Company

CAPSULE REPORT: Sometimes a cookie or slice of cake won’t do: You simply pine for a great tart. You wish you could transport yourself to the pâtisseries of Paris, the best tea rooms of London or that little bakery where you enjoyed so many memorable nibbles. You think that if you only had the time, you’d pick up some of the best butter and a fresh sack of flour from a great mill, drag out the rolling pin and tart tins and fill those crusts with—oh, where shall we start? Chocolate? Lemon? Macadamia? Passionfruit? Pumpkin? Raspberry?

Yearn no more, foodie friends: Daphne has anticipated your needs; all of these tarts can be in your freezer tomorrow. And what lovely tarts they are! All natural and made from top ingredients; just thaw and serve, plain or with a selection of traditional toppings like whipped cream, or with creative garnishes (suggested on the box). You can feast alone or dazzle guests, send memorable gifts or enjoy indulgent snacks for two (each box contains two 3.5-inch-diameter tarts). You can also buy the delicious, buttery tart shells unfilled, and add your own favorite filling.

The tarts are not just tasty but beautifully packaged. Mom won’t complain that you didn’t take the time to bake personally, should a shipment arrive for Mother’s Day. Read the full review below, and send your Queen of Hearts these Queens of Tarts.

Introduction

After years of juggling a real estate career and a family, Bo Bartlett (a.k.a. Daphne) did what other artisan food producers have done: She followed her passion for fine food and earned a culinary degree. A pastry externship at New York City’s famed restaurant Chanterelle developed her interest in sweets, and she founded The Daphne Baking Company to make it easy for busy hosts and hostesses to serve top-quality, all natural desserts.

Working in her home kitchen in Kent, Connecticut, Bo baked dozens of her first product, the Chocolate Tart, until she got it right: the perfect, from-the-freezer product. Friends and family across the country received batch after batch for feedback, until the the tarts* were deemed ready to hit the shelves. Lemon Tart and Macadamia Nut Tart followed soon after, and the thaw-and-serve tart line has now expanded to six flavors plus a ready-to-fill tart shell—and a commercial production facility, of course. The line is currently available at retailers in the Northeast, and by overnight delivery to tart lovers nationwide.

Passionfruit Tart
Those with a passion for fine pastry can always have a ready supply with Daphne tarts in the freezer. Shown above, Passionfruit Tarts, served with club soda and fresh mint. Muscat is an excellent choice for a dessert wine.

*Technically, “tart” refers to a full-size pastry that serves several people. The individual tart is called a tartlet. The bite-size tarts are miniature tarts. Daphne’s products are tartlets.
