Ice cream sandwiches

Ready for some nice, cold ice cream sandwiches?  You can buy them (check out Ottimo from Ciao Bella) or make them with these molds from WilliamSonoma.com. The set of 3 clever shapes make the ice cream taste even better. Press your favorite ice cream into cookies or brownies and have a stellar (or bovine or porcine) dessert.

Food tip of the day

Egg Creams

If you’re from New York, you know what an egg cream is—a refreshing, fizzy chocolate drink with no eggs or cream (it uses milk). So why is it called an egg cream? The truth is lost to history, but one version says it’s because egg whites were used at the beginning to make it extra-foamy; other food historians say it’s the American pronunciation of “chocolat et crème.” Even though you may not have an authentic seltzer bottle to give it a good “spritz,” you can mix one up yourself. In a tall glass, combine:

2 tablespoons bittersweet chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce (quality counts!)
1/3 cup whole milk, ice cold
1 cup seltzer or club soda

Blend chocolate and milk thoroughly. Add seltzer while stirring continuously with a whisk or tall spoon until you have a foamy head. Serve immediately with a straw. We love bottled Jeff’s Egg Creams—in regular and diet versions.

July is National Ice Cream Month, and we’re introducing you to some of America’s artisanal ice cream producers. Even if you can’t get to them in person, you can have the ice cream overnighted in dry ice. Consider it your patriotic duty to try new and interesting flavors—not just the old reliables.

To offset the ice cream, we have lots of no-calorie liquid refreshment— some of our favorite bottled iced teas and some delicious waters. And, as always, many other specialty food favorites. There’s also an vastly expanded Food Film Festival list. If you’re renting films this summer, check out our film finds and create your own series of festivals with matching food. You can even enter them in a contest and win prizes!

We also attended the industry’s NASFT Summer Fancy Food Show this month, and selected hundreds of new products to share with you. You can see highlights of our Top Picks. In addition to this monthly online magazine, we e-mail our Top Food Pick Of The Week newsletter to opt-in subscribers. If you don’t already receive it, click here to have it delivered directly to your e-mailbox. Of the thousands of specialty foods we taste each year, these 52 weekly recommendations are our favorites for both home use and gift-giving. You won’t want to miss them!

THE NIBBLE™ does not sell the foods we review
or receive fees from manufacturers for recommending them.

Our recommendations are based purely on our opinion, after tasting thousands of products each year, that they represent the best in their respective categories.
